The
source of inspiration and material of choice for the works of Jan
Peter Langkamp is the tree, an organism that grows in an endless variation
of shapes and can be harvested accordingly.
Not
only has every species its own distinct colour and possibilities,
each branch and trunk has its unique shape and characteristics. Jan
Peter is skilled at making optimum use of those exclusive shapes and
qualities of the tree.
After
closely examining the tree from every angle and in its entirety, a
plan is made for the ensuing project. Crooked branches, turns and
straight parts, thick or thin, are selected with the utmost care.
Every nook and cranny of the tree will get its own special destination.
Sometimes a branch or trunk will inspire the making of a free form
object, other times something more functional.
For
the making of furniture, the trunks and branches are cloven instead
of sawn, thus allowing the wood to retain its original shape and surface
structure.
The cleaved parts are then shaped to measure with axes and stored
to dry.
After drying, the individual parts are assembled using traditional
craftsmanship resulting in unique pieces of furniture in which the
tree and its natural splendour can still be clearly recognised.
